n*gram health: How Immersive Digital Environments Can Make a Difference for Homebound Older Adults

January 21, 2021 by Justin Russo

Last year, the world confronted staggering new public health and economic crises fueled by the coronavirus outbreak. But for many people, the pandemic also highlighted the vulnerabilities and challenges facing older adults and their caretakers even under the best of circumstances. And at a time when even quick excursions were often off-limits for high-risk senior citizens, the question of helping older adults who are homebound or living in isolation to stay calm and engaged became increasingly urgent.

Specifically designed for older adults, caregivers and families, n*gram health delivers therapeutic virtual experiences to improve quality of life. These experiences involve immersive music and visual content designed to ease tension and promote wellbeing.

n*gram health’s experiences are customized based on participants’ moods and needs, which are assessed via a short pre-survey. They are accessible on any phone or tablet via a simple text message interface that delivers new content to older adults and caregivers on a regular basis.

In 2020, n*gram health partnered with a number of senior care organizations, facilitating discussions on music-related topics with groups of homebound older adults over Zoom and providing access to interactive music therapy experiences.

Session attendees loved seeing animals and nature in their living rooms, feeling a sense of ease and calm during the sessions. Participants also reported improvements on measures of anxiety and alertness at the conclusion of the experience. n*gram has a wide library of content, and developed customized scenes for specific clients based on animals that were particularly meaningful to them.

See below for a sample immersive experience:

n*gram health is partnering with forward-looking senior care organizations to offer these services and improve quality of life for older adults with a wide range of cognitive and physical conditions.
