Meet Steve, a participant in the Music & Memory program at Langdon Place Assisted Living in Exeter, NH. Music has always played a special role in his life. Growing up in New Orleans, Dixieland jazz – songs like “Bourbon Street Parade” and artists like Dave Brubeck – instantly transport him back to childhood memories filled with joy and familiarity.
Steve’s musical tastes stretch across genres. He loves Bizet’s Carmen, the harmonies of Crosby, Stills & Nash, and one of his most meaningful favorites is “Sweet Caroline”, a song that reminds him of his daughter who lives far away, but feels close again each time the music begins.
Through Music & Memory, Steve receives a personalized playlist filled with the songs that shaped his life. These moments of recognition and connection bring comfort, spark memories, and restore a sense of identity that can fade with age or cognitive decline.
Every day, individuals like Steve experience the simple but profound impact of hearing the music they love. Favorite songs:
- Lift spirits
- Support connection with caregivers and family
- Encourage engagement and communication
- Bring joy and emotional grounding
These individuals benefit every day from having access to their favorite music. It enhances their quality of life, restores their sense of identity and connection to others, and provides a foundation for having as much comfort, pleasure, meaning and well-being in their days as possible.
This work is only possible because people in our community believe in the healing power of music. Music & Memory relies on supporters who help ensure that more seniors, across care settings, communities, and backgrounds, can experience the comfort and connection that personalized music provides.
