Meet Alexis Mayo, a Music & Memory Ambassador from Texarkana, Texas, who is making a remarkable impact on the lives of seniors in her community. Music has been part of Alexis’s life for as long as she can remember, first through her mother and brothers, then through theater, and now through performances with her family band, The Mayos. Her favorite songs, like “Sentimental Journey” and “Grandpa” by The Judds, are the same kinds of pieces she now shares with older adults living with memory loss.
Alexis regularly visits memory care communities to sing for residents and witness firsthand how music can ease agitation, spark memories, and create moments of connection. She also speaks to students across her region, helping young people understand Alzheimer’s disease and the importance of respecting and learning from older generations. She even authored a keepsake journal, I Will Remember You, which encourages children to record treasured memories and stories from their grandparents.
This work is only possible because people in our community believe in the healing power of music. Music & Memory relies on supporters who help ensure that more seniors, across care settings, communities, and backgrounds, can experience the comfort and connection that personalized music provides.
