Shirley’s Story

December 23, 2025

Meet Shirley, a participant in the Music & Memory program at Riverside Health Senior Living Community in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Shirley has been a music lover her entire life and continues to share that love as a member of the chorus at her community. Now living in the Memory Care unit, Shirley uses a personalized Music & Memory playlist to stay connected to the music that has always brought her joy. Her favorites include Perry Como’s “Catch a Falling Star” and Johnny Mathis’ “A Certain Smile.” When asked about her playlist, Shirley shared simply, “I enjoy listening to the music. It brings me peace.”

Stories like Shirley’s are made possible by a community that believes in the power of music. That shared commitment helps Music & Memory continue to offer:

  • Practical tools for caregivers supporting older adults in care settings
  • Personalized music playlists that promote calm, connection, and well-being
  • Improved quality of life for individuals living with dementia and cognitive loss

This work is only possible because people in our community believe in the healing power of music. Music & Memory relies on supporters who help ensure that more seniors, across care settings, communities, and backgrounds, can experience the comfort and connection that personalized music provides.

If you believe in the power of music please donate to support our work!
